Aussies remain in Israeli detention

One Australian has been shot and four more are in Israeli detention after they were caught in a deadly clash over a humanitarian mission bound for Gaza.

The Australians were on board an aid flotilla trying to reach the Palestinian territory.

Nine people died when Israeli forces stormed the ships, sparking international condemnation. A 20-year-old Australian man has undergone surgery after being shot in the leg.

The incident has added further strain to the troubled relationship between Australia and Israel.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd spoke out against the violence and loss of life.

"The Australian government condemns any use of violence under the sorts of circumstances that we have seen," he told reporters in Canberra.

"Furthermore, we are deeply concerned about the loss of life which has occurred."

Mr Rudd called for Israel's blockade of Gaza to end.

Australia and Israel's usually cordial relations have become troubled with the attack on the aid convoy coming soon after the federal government expelled an Israeli diplomat.

The expulsion was in retaliation for Israel's use of forged Australian passports in an assassination in Dubai.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith also deplored the flotilla incident, describing it as "terrible and shocking" in a speech to parliament.

"I think very many Australians will be shocked by it," he said.

Australia called on Israel to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident straight away, and for that inquiry to be transparent.

The Australians in Israeli detention include two Fairfax reporters, Paul McGeough and Kate Geraghty.

They are understood to have refused an offer of deportation and are now in a detention centre at Beersheva. They have had their footage and equipment confiscated.

Peter Fray, editor of Fairfax's The Sydney Morning Herald, called on Israel to allow the reporters to tell their story.

Mr Fray said the reporters had "every right" to be on board the flotilla.

"We ask that Israel respect their right to do their jobs," he said.

The other detained Australians are two women who are understood to be unharmed.

Protests were held in Australian cities on Tuesday against Israel's actions. An estimated 4000 people stormed Sydney's Town Hall forecourt, chanting "Israel, USA, how many kids have you killed today?".

The crowd observed a minute's silence to remember the dead, standing by banners that read "Israel is a terrorist state".

In Canberra, about 120 protesters clasped candles and chanted in front of the Israeli embassy.

Palestinian flags were waved and some wore traditional scarves in a gesture of support.

The crowd heard that Israel had gone too far in attacking the convoy, and that the international community had to act swiftly or such actions would be repeated.

Protester Mahmoud Abujafar, who was born in the West Bank but lives in Canberra, said he had been feeling bad about the deaths all day.

"People came to help us, the people in Gaza, and they were killed," he told AAP.

He said he was feeling very proud of the Australians who had joined the aid flotilla.

Protesters chanted "free free Palestine" and "shame" as police guarded the gate to the embassy.

Earlier in the day, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said the flotilla incident was "very distressing" and expressed his regret.

The opposition has not criticised Israel, saying more time is needed to sift through the differing claims about what happened.

1. These meetings were not approved by the committee.

2. No one officially reported to the committee in writing, on who have organized these meetings respectively.

3. Who have attended these meetings respectively, where and when?

4. What was discussed in those meetings and

5. What was the agreement of those meetings?

The NSW TDA is an open, fully audited and transparent organization. We can not afford and must not resort in secrecy.

No Personal Issues

The NSW TDA time were consumed because of personal issues involving Anne Turner, Trevor Bradley and Tony Denton.

For a number of reasons Ted may take legal action against the NSW TDA. I will prefer to rescind Ted’s suspension. I repeat again, Ted’s suspension is not beneficial for anyone. It is a manipulation of a couple of power drunk people.

My Priority

My priorities are NSW Upper House Inquiry, amendment of the last Taxi Bill, countering media and public attacks against taxi drivers and many burning issues I was trying to raise for a long time. Infighting is the last thing in my mind.

Anne’s Ignorance and Determination to Remain Ignorant

In many times Anne spoke to me about many serious issues based on rank talk. I politely advised her to read posts at the Exec and other documents before making such a big statement. Her responses used to be, “I know what I am doing and don’t patronise me”. Surely, I have to draw a boundary to protect myself from false and fabricated accusations.

Anne has been threatening to resign over Trevor, Tony, Ted and a few other issues! She is free to choose her destiny.

However, in all of those threat and actions I can not see any interest of the NSW TDA.

BLOWIN IN THE WIND was a cutting edge documentary, directed by David Bradbury. It is a wonderful documentary. My public and private conversation with Dr. Daug Rokke and other experts on depleted uranium encouraged me to promote David and his good work.

However David’s recent work My Asian Heart is an ego trip in partnership with Philip Blenkinsop i.e. the White Knight with his shining armor (camera) who went to save all Asians! Or so it seems. This documentary is financed by some Australian film finance group! This alone raised my alarm. This alarm was justified. I found My Asian Heart is bright and hollow, foul and spectacular like the ANZAC legend and ANZAC related ceremonies unlike Denis Kevans Memorial Concert on Anzac Eve 2009. Lot’s of noise, no beginning, no end, no big pictures, no moral, no story and lacking in plot or any direction.

Who knows! May be a sex craze Australian went for a cheap sex tour in Asia under the guise of “I love Asia and I am the liberator of Asia”!! His Asian photographer girlfriend/partner could have shed some light about this issue. Surprisingly she was absent at the screening night. Many of his subjects (photographs) are not well- known to him and he was not well informed about a few events from his own documentary.

In the documentary Philip ostracised sleepy Chinese mountainous town officials for their failure to provide a “Taj Mahal ” for an unknown Australian photo artist. He also crucified the Chinese workers and their work ethics in that segment!

At the Sydney Hoyts Cinema complex when I expressed my opinion about the documentary both David and Philip were not happy with me and both of them failed to address my concerns properly.

However, a few minutes later my friend who was sitting next to me and personally knows both Philip and David asked a question. At that time my friend made a light hearted reference about me along the lines of “my Bangladeshi friend …. “.

That broke the camel’s back! Volcanic lava erupted!! Philip seized on this, realized I was from Bangladesh and then he jumped on me by saying, “I have been to Dhaka recently. People earn $1.00 a day over there, if I ask any of you to live in Bangladesh for a week – most of you will commit suicide, …“. My suspicion about Philip developed further and I waited to talk to him personally to clear the air.

My friend Jeff introduced me to Philip. I said, “Philip are you a Clive of India or what”? He had a dumb look on his face. My friend translated the terminology to him.

I could have said, “you are talking about the slums of Dhaka and you know nothing about those millionaires and billionaires of that country. The wellbeing and happiness level of Bangladesh is better than Australia. Most importantly despite the level of material affluence of Australia, comparatively more of us in Australia commit suicide than the Bangladeshis. Nobody has been running "anti-Indian stories in the media". Some media, including Cabbie, has highlighted that, especially in Melbourne, a substantial number of foreign students, most of whom are from the Subcontinent, are driving taxis with little or no driving experience, knowledge of the language, the city, the rules and regulations. That has to stop! Not only are they endangering themselves and other road users, they are endangering competent cabbies, especially from their own part of the world, because they anger, irritate and even frighten the public with their incompetence thus turning them against cab drivers in general.

Professional cabbies are used to the phrase: "Nice to have a driver who can speak English (or know where he is going) for a change." They rarely say "nice to have a white driver for a change". Nothing to do with racism, all to do with competence. Given that the public pays for the fare, they have a right to expect a reasonable level of service, but most importantly driving and communication skills.

It is the responsibility of civilized society to provide a safe workplace and safer work practices to workers under the Occupational Health and Safety legislation under the Duty of Care provisions. It is also a fundamental right of a worker to work in a safe work place that adheres to safe work practices.



In the state of New South Wales we had the Keatsdale Report, Dalziel Reports and Cook Reports which are relevant to to-days taxi drivers safety initiatives in NSW. I believe the current Victorian taxi driver's safety issues are not too different to their NSW counter parts. You are welcome to contact your NSW counterparts to obtain copies of these reports mentioned for some assistance or guidance should you wish to do so.




The commendable multicultural, Melbourne taxi drivers' spontaneous blockade/strike was a genuine and legal one. No one should dismiss or minimise their great effort with blatant and pseudo racism as we have witnessed recently. For example, taking off shirts on a wintry night as these drivers did was a symbol of their actual working conditions and the industrial reality that they experience. These taxi drivers do not have cameras, a global positioning system, workable safety shields or anything in this so called 21st century Victorian work environment. In terms of safety, they are virtually naked and unprotected.



When super models take their bikinis or bras off in the middle of the town center to high light or draw attention to their causes, there is barely any criticism. That situation is unlike the recent outcry directed to these vulnerable Victorian taxi drivers and the protest style they used. Recent murmurings and attempts to smear Indian students in general, many of whom were involved in this Victorian protest, and their living practices so as to undermine and destruct these taxi driver's spotlighting of unacceptable working conditions are purely racially driven. Many European and American backpackers and students also live in an identical cost effective and uncomfortable manner as some Indian students and by extension Indian origin taxi drivers are purported to do. This is blatant generalization designed to undermine the whole issue, which is the shameful and unsafe standard of working conditions and safety being experienced by Victorian taxi drivers.




Surely, a student or any workers poverty should not deny or diminish their basic industrial and safety related rights.
